Meet our South African celebrity champions for the UN Global Road Safety Campaign
In an effort to support South Africa in its fight against rising road fatalities, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, launched the UN Global Campaign for Road Safety at a function held in Johannesburg and attended Sindisiwe Chikunga, the Minister of Transport in May 2024. As part of the efforts to promote safe streets, billboards of the celebrities were launched in various cities across South Africa, with key safety messages for drivers, pedestrians and all road users to take caution whilst on the roads. The celebrities attended with the official launch of the Road Safety campaign in Johannesburg with Mr. Jean Todt. The event was graced with the presence of celebrities who committed to the campaign, aspiring to create streets that embody life. The Road Safety champions for the campaign included Sello Maake, Gaisang Noge, Leanne Manas, Maduvha Madima, Bryoni Govendor, Thokozani Ndaba, Dr. Moratwe Masima, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Doctor Khumalo. The installation of billboards advocating road safety in South Africa’s major urban areas was a big milestone. These billboards, strategically positioned in high-risk areas, serve as a reminder of the significance of road safety. They emphasize the notion that every road user can help reduce traffic accidents and fatalities.
