18 July 2024
United Nations in South Africa in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, TEDxJohannesburg and the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), brought together an unforgettable lineup of speakers and performers who shared ideas around the world's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Lebohang Liepollo Pheko offers a critical view of the SDGs, praising their inclusivity but arguing they fail to address deeper inequalities and suggesting a shift towards reparative economics and well-being economies. She’s an expert in African-centered trade and development, involved in various international roles, and has worked in 47 countries. Her TEDx talk promotes alternative development frameworks. Pheko is a renowned scholar and policy expert with significant contributions in African-centered international trade, regionalism, feminist economics, and development theory. She has influenced policy alternatives for African countries’ post-COVID economic recovery and is actively involved in various roles, including the Walter and Patricia Rodney Commission on Reparations, the Wellbeing Economic Alliance, Trade Collective, and as a National Planning Commissioner.
