UNFPA Celebrates World Population Day 2024

11 July 2024

World Population Day 2024 provides an opportunity for countries, societies, and policymakers to celebrate advancements in data collection and analysis, while also critically assessing their practices. Are we asking the right questions? Is our data collection safe and inclusive for all? Who remains uncounted and unaccounted for?

Pretoria, South AfricaJuly 11, 2024 – UNFPA South Africa proudly joins the global community in commemorating World Population Day 2024, focusing on the theme “Embracing the Power of Inclusive Data Towards a Resilient and Equitable Future for All.” This year's observance highlights the crucial role of inclusive data in creating a future where everyone’s rights and choices are acknowledged and respected.

Three Decades of Progress and the Role of Data

Thirty years ago, the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) underscored the importance of putting people at the centre of development. This commitment has led to significant strides in women’s access to reproductive care, reductions in maternal mortality, and advances in gender equality. A vital, yet often overlooked, factor in these achievements has been data, which was a focal point in the ICPD Programme of Action.

Since 1994, numerous initiatives, including the UN Secretary-General’s call for a “data revolution,” have sought to equip nations with the necessary data systems to track and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The last three decades have seen remarkable improvements in data collection, analysis, and technology, leading to more comprehensive and accurate information. This progress has enabled societies worldwide to better measure and achieve health-related goals and ensure the fulfilment of rights and choices for all.

Insights from the Census and Department of Social Development

Data from the 2022 census and information from the Department of Social Development (DSD) reveal both progress and persistent challenges. The census shows significant demographic shifts, including urbanization trends and changes in family structures, that impact service delivery and policy planning. Insights from the DSD highlight improvements in access to social services and support systems, yet also underscores ongoing disparities in health care access and outcomes, particularly among marginalized communities.

Addressing Gaps and Inequalities

Despite these advancements, significant gaps remain. Research from UNFPA’s State of World Population 2024 indicates that the world’s most marginalized communities continue to be excluded from progress. Inequality in health care access is widening, both within and between countries. Furthermore, progress in preventing avoidable maternal deaths has stalled since 2016. In our increasingly unpredictable world, reliable and inclusive data is more important than ever. It must be used as a tool to drive progress for everyone, ensuring that no one is left behind.

A Critical Moment for Reflection and Action

World Population Day 2024 provides an opportunity for countries, societies, and policymakers to celebrate advancements in data collection and analysis, while also critically assessing their practices. Are we asking the right questions? Is our data collection safe and inclusive for all? Who remains uncounted and unaccounted for?

As half the world prepares to vote in 2024, concerns about demographic changes and trends, often fuelled by misinformation, are shaping political platforms and influencing public opinion. Instead of succumbing to fear, we must delve deeper into data. Improved data collection and analysis are essential for creating more inclusive and resilient societies and systems.

Humanity in Numbers

People’s lived experiences cannot be fully captured by statistics alone. Humanity represents an #8BillionStrong tapestry of diverse hopes and desires. By counting individuals in all their diversity, we can fulfil the ICPD’s vision of a peaceful and prosperous future where rights and choices are universally enjoyed.
