The UN in South Africa hosts educational youth workshop on #SDGs

Pretoria, South Africa – UN Environment today celebrated the Youth Day in South Africa in collaboration with the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) by hosting an educational youth workshop on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the UNIC Library in Pretoria.

Youth from various communities in Gauteng braced the cold weather to learn more about the #SDGs and the role they can play in creating a sustainable future for generations to come. Natania Botha, head of membership at WESSA said the organization is “happy to have partnered with the UN on this year’s Youth Day to raise awareness about the SDGs and educate and equip youth with the right knowledge on how they can localize the SDGs.”

This message was further echoed by the head of UNEnviroment in South Africa, Cecila Njenga, who added that “each of the SDGs are related to each other and one goal cannot be addressed by leaving another goal behind.” She told the youth that the aim of the workshop was “to build SDG champions to work with other young people across the country not only to raise awareness but also committing to take action and holding leaders accountable to create a better world for future generations.”

Adding on the responsibility of leaders in realising the SDGs, the head of UN in South Africa, Nardos Bekele-Thomas, said: “The SDGs give responsibility to every single individual on this planet not just individually but collectively because leadership is not just about power, leadership is serving citizens and preserving the environment.”
