The exhibition: Titled “Putting a Human (Rights) Face to LGBTIQ+ Forcibly Displaced Persons in South Africa”, the exhibition brings to light the lived realities of LGBTIQ+ individuals who have been forcibly displaced due to violence and discrimination based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or sex characteristics (SOGIESC).

In commemoration of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) under the 2025 global theme “The Power of Communities”, The Fruit Basket in partnership with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Embassies of the Netherlands and Ireland in South Africa, invites members of the media to visit and amplify powerful new photo exhibition at Victoria Yards, Johannesburg from Tuesday 20 May until Friday, 20 June 2025. The exhibition IS open to the public free of charge.
Background: The exhibition: Titled “Putting a Human (Rights) Face to LGBTIQ+ Forcibly Displaced Persons in South Africa”, the exhibition brings to light the lived realities of LGBTIQ+ individuals who have been forcibly displaced due to violence and discrimination based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or sex characteristics (SOGIESC). Through portraits and personal testimonies, the exhibition highlights the resilience, challenges, and hopes of LGBTIQ+ migrants and asylum seekers in South Africa. It also underscores the urgent need for inclusive protection systems and safe, affirming spaces.
